Living in Paraguay: Is 1,000 Euros a Month Enough?

First the exchange rate: why many figures online are too low

Before you read any USD or euro figure, you need the rate in your head. The guaraní appreciated strongly from early 2025 to mid-2026, from roughly 7,800 Gs. per USD to roughly 6,100 Gs. per USD (Wise, early July 2026). But many popular cost overviews still calculate with the old rate of about 7,800 Gs./USD. That means: if you convert their USD amounts to euros at the real rate, you land roughly 20 percent too low.

Practical consequence: do not rely blindly on USD tables. The stable figures are the ones in guaraníes, because those barely change on the ground, while the conversion into euros fluctuates with the rate. Where we cite USD bands from the sources below, they are calculated at the old rate, so your actual burden in euros lands more toward the upper edge or slightly above.

What does rent cost by neighborhood?

Rent decides whether 1,000 euros is enough. The following table shows bands for a 1-bedroom apartment by neighborhood in Asunción and the surrounding area, as of 2026. The USD amounts come from a survey that was calculated at the old rate (~7,800 Gs./USD), so your real euro burden tends to be a bit higher (see the exchange-rate note above).

• →Cheap living (250 to 380 USD): San Lorenzo, Barrio Obrero, Sajonia, Luque. Here the most is left over from the 1,000-euro budget.
• →Mid-range (440 to 700 USD): Downtown, Recoleta, Las Mercedes. More central, more cafés and infrastructure, but the rent already eats a big chunk.
• →Top neighborhoods (500 to 900 USD): Villa Morra, Carmelitas. Popular with newcomers, modern buildings, but the rent alone can blow your 1,000-euro budget.

What do groceries, utilities and everyday life cost?

Below rent it stays manageable. For a single person's groceries at the supermarket (Stock, Superseis), sources report 200 to 300 USD a month. Anyone shopping at local markets and simpler stores lands below that. A lunch menu (menú del día) costs roughly 35,000 Gs., a dinner for two in the mid-range segment roughly 26 USD.

The running utilities are moderate, with one important exception: air conditioning. In the Paraguayan summer it drives the electricity bill up significantly, so budget a surcharge for it. The following bands apply to a typical 1-bedroom apartment, as of 2026.

• →Groceries, single person: 200 to 300 USD a month.
• →Lunch menu (menú del día): roughly 35,000 Gs.
• →Electricity (ANDE) plus water (ESSAP) together: roughly 42 USD a month, water alone 5 to 15 USD. Air conditioning in summer drives the electricity share up sharply.
• →Fiber internet: 18 to 25 USD a month.
• →Mobile, roughly 10 GB of data: about 14 USD a month.
• →Bus: roughly 3,800 Gs. per ride (about 0.49 USD). Uber or Bolt for 5 km roughly 2.60 USD.

How much do you really need per month? (Budget bands 2026)

Now the whole thing as a monthly budget. Two surveys give usable reference points. Numbeo cites roughly 480 USD for a single person without rent and roughly 1,976 USD for a family of four without rent. Add the rent of your desired neighborhood from the table above and you have a solid estimate.

More illustrative are the all-in bands from ExpatSettle, meaning including rent, for Asunción: budget living 800 to 1,000 USD, comfortable 1,200 to 1,500 USD, luxury from 2,000 USD. A comfortable single life in a top neighborhood like Villa Morra or Carmelitas is put elsewhere at 1,500 to 2,000 USD. All of these figures are calculated at the old rate, so in euros you actually land more toward the upper edge.

Translated to the original question: 1,000 euros is enough for a simple single person outside the top neighborhoods or in the countryside. If you want to live in a good location, eat out more often and have a buffer, plan for more like 1,200 to 1,500 euros. Couples share rent and utilities, so they do not need double, families land considerably higher, above all because of housing, school and health insurance.

The often forgotten item: health insurance

Most 1,000-euro calculations online forget an item that can quickly become the largest after rent: health insurance. It is not required for the residency, but you should not budget without sensible coverage. A local prepaga for a single person runs roughly 30 to 100 USD a month depending on the plan, more for older people and with better benefits. International policies cost considerably more.

So calculate this amount into your monthly budget from the start, otherwise the nice 1,000-euro calculation is quickly exceeded.
